In the 1990s, Agassi broke with convention – not only through his playing style, but also through his eye-catching clothing and choice of shoes. The eye-catching “Hot Lava” colorway of the Air Tech Challenge II caused a sensation at the 1990 French Open and permanently changed the perception of tennis fashion. The shoe was developed by legendary designer Tinker Hatfield, who created a radical counterpart to the traditional white tennis world with the motto “Anti-Country Club.” The NIKE Air Tech Challenge II impressed with innovative technologies such as NIKE Air cushioning, high lateral stability, and stylish color concepts – and thus became a cult object for sneaker and tennis fans alike. Years later, the NIKE Air Tech Challenge II remains an integral part of sneaker culture: it influenced the NIKE Air Yeezy 2, among others, while the “Hot Lava” made a comeback in 2024.
