Lacoste – tennis player, crocodile, icon and brand
Lacoste has achieved what only very few have managed to do so far: the brand logo is known all over the world. But let's start at the beginning. Boston in 1923: René Lacoste, a young French tennis player, makes a bet with a Davis Cup teammate. What it's about: He is supposed to win his next match. The bet: a crocodile skin suitcase. He loses, but what he wins is a new nickname: Le Crocodile. After René becomes known around the world as "The Crocodile" thanks to his dogged and eager style of play, Lacoste becomes a symbol and a brand.
Designer Robert George creates the Lacoste logo and René Lacoste has it embroidered directly on all his blazers. Speaking of blazers, this rather unsporting garment was part of the official outfit in which tennis used to be played. A few years later, in 1927 to be exact, it became much more comfortable, practical and, above all, sporty: the first polo shirt sees the light of day. This shirt was called "L 12.12", which is a code for "L" like Lacoste, "1" for the new piqué material and "12" for the pattern.
