The Birkenstock story begins in 1774: almost 250 years ago, Johann Adam Birkenstock registered as a shoemaker in the church archives of the town of Langen-Bergheim. In keeping with the times, business was normal until 1896, when his descendant Konrad Birkenstock had the brilliant idea of manufacturing and selling flexible, ergonomic footbed insoles. In 1925 Konrad Birkenstock acquires a factory site, which is rebuilt according to his own wishes and where the "Blue Footbed" is produced in day and night shifts. After training specialists in the "Carl Birkenstock System" – a system dedicated to foot orthopedics and "natural walking" – in special courses, the first sandal appears in 1963 – the iconic "Madrid", a deep-footbed sandal with an orthopedic, flexible footbed.
Gradually, other Birkenstock sandals follow, for example the "Gizeh" thong sandal or the world-famous "Arizona" sandal with two straps. Of course, still on offer: footbed insoles, with which the brand became famous. By the way, since the 80s Birkenstock produces with environmentally friendly glue and the energy consumption was already reduced by more than 90% in the early 90s.
