Paul Van Doren, James Van Doren, Gordon Lee and Serge Delia have a great idea in 1966: The production and distribution of their own shoes with vulcanized soles in Anaheim, California – at that time a real quality feature. The "Van Doren Rubber Company" sells twelve pairs of its "#44 Deck Shoe", today known as "Authentic", for a price between $2.49 and $4.99 on the first day of business. The high quality, thick, very grippy and sticky sole and tough canvas upper quickly make the rounds in and around Anaheim and local skateboarders in particular love the VANS sneakers for their durability and sole.
After a while more VANS sneakers follow, such as the #95. Today's "Era" is designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, tailored to the ever-growing skate clientele and features a padded shoe collar and quite a few color combination options. In 1977 and in the years to come, other VANS classics follow, including #36 – the Old Skool. With it, a present-day VANS staple is established: The white VANS Sidestripe. Also new is the #98 Slip-On – still a real icon today – and the Sk8-Hi. By the end of the 70s, VANS has 70 stores in California and sells its sneakers all over the world.
