The Reebok story begins in Great Britain, or to be more precise in Bolton. We are in the year 1895 and the Brits have one main wish: to run faster. Back in the day, Joseph William Foster was one of the first to manufacture running shoes with spikes – but not yet under the name Reebok. The shoes functioned wonderfully, and as a result Foster was quickly able to build up a customer base. By 1924 he was already manufacturing the shoes for the runners participating in the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. In 1958 two of the founder's uncles established an spin-off – Reebok! The name actually comes from the Afrikaans word for the African Rhebok antelope. Why? It is fast and a good jumper! Fairly obvious, right? The major turning point for Reebok came at the end of the 1970s when Paul Fireman, owner of a sporting goods wholesale company, became acquainted with the brand at a trade fair and three years later acquired the licence to bring Reebok to the American market. In 1982 Reebok brought the first fitness shoe specially designed for women to the market. The Reebok Freestyle appeared at the perfect time, as fitness and aerobics were to be the next big thing. The next milestone was Reebok pump technology, which allows the shoe to adjust perfectly to the foot using air chambers. With models such as the Classic Leather, the Classic Nylon, the Instapump Fury, the Pump Running Dual and the Ventilator (to name but a few) Reebok did of course have a few models within the running segment right from the start, which naturally was also the case within the Basketball segment– Shaquille O’Neal's "Shaqnosis" or Allen Iverson's "The Question", anyone?
