Basketball shoes - Is it the shoes? It’s gotta be the shoes!
It all began in 1917 with the Chuck Taylor All Star by Converse - the first basketball shoe! But a few things have changed since then. The jump from the canvas "Chuck“ to the first basketball sneakers made of leather was a big one. In the 1960 the NIKE Bruin (actually the first basketball shoe by NIKE) and the Puma Clyde (the first "signature sneaker“) basketball shoes conquered the hardwood floors of the NBA. The advantages: a more sturdy upper and improved soles. High-top basketball shoes were made known by the Pro Leather, which was worn by Dr. J Julius Erving. The benefits were clear to see - the extended upper stabilised the ankle. The NIKE Blazer and Air Force 1 basketball shoes were also high-tops, however, the Air Force 1 boasted a certain innovation right from the start: the NIKE Air cushioning in the sole. In 1985 Michael Jordan not only revolutionised the NBA, but his Jordan basketball shoes, also featuring "Air" technology in the sole, also became style icons in their own right. The 1990s were the golden era for basketball shoes, with all brands not only releasing legendary sneakers (even to this day), but technically speaking, with a number innovations being presented in the form of Zoom Air, Reebok Hexalite cushioning and the Reebok Pump system. In the middle of the 2000s, leather basketball shoes were replaced by shoes made from synthetic, often more breathable materials, with the 2008 NIKE Hyperdunk one of the first pioneers.
