NIKE was founded in 1964 in Beaverton, Oregon, by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman – however it was not under the name NIKE, but rather "Blue Ribbon Sports". Only some time later, in the 1970s, was the company renamed as NIKE, after the Greek goddess of victory Nike. And it makes sense since no other brand represents performance and sporting ambition quite like NIKE. This has also been the key to the company's success, for NIKE became really big when the decision was made to promote the brand through testimonials and to sponsor a host of different athletes. The list of endorsed athletes past and present include sporting greats such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Neymar, Jerome Boateng, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, NIKE does not limit itself to ball sports, with stars sponsored by NIKE also including world-class boxer Manny Pacquiao, for example. NIKE can of course now boast a host of accomplishments. For example, Nike Air - chambers that are filled with compressed air in the midsole of some NIKE sneakers. Examples are the NIKE Air Force 1 and the NIKE Air Max models.
