A Bathing Ape - Camo, Shark Hoodies and much, much more!

A Bathing Ape originated in Harajuku, a neighborhood in Shibuya, Tokyo - the birthplace of Japanese streetwear. After years of working at Popeye magazine, which is mainly about fashion, founder Nigo opened his store "Nowhere" together with Jun Tatakashi (Undercover, anybody?) and shortly after dropped his own brand A Bathing Ape, or BAPE for short. What does the name stand for? A Bathing Ape refers to the Japanese phrase "A bathing ape in lukewarm water" and describes someone who indulges in something without restraint and with complete satisfaction. This name by the way comes to him after a "Planet of the Apes" marathon.

Nigo keeps his label exclusive and only produces in small quantities. He sells a part in the store, the rest are handed to his friends. His friends are known in the scene and a hype arises around A Bathing Ape. Exclusive stores and collabs, like Pepsi or G-Shock, follow. And it doesn't take long for the rap scene to discover Bape, from Kanye to Soulja Boy - A Bathing Ape is everywhere. But every hype passes, Bape also gets hit by that fate and Nigo sells his label. Sub-labels like Aape, Baby Milo Store as well as Bape Black emerge and the collabs pile up. However, A Bathing Ape will never lose its legendary status, Bape is culture and it's hard to imagine the scene without it.
