Early 1980s in California: Good mood, sun, surfing and skateboarding. The Dogtown Boys paved the way and almost everyone has a board – with wheels or without. The corresponding style is also established and Shawn Stussy is in the right place at the right time. In the beginning he produces surfboards and writes his name on them with a marker as a feature – the now legendary Stüssy logo is born. A little later he also uses his lettering on t-shirts, shorts, caps and more and sells his surf and streetwear out of his car.
The business is going better and better, so he and a partner sell the Stüssy brand professionally. In 1988 Stüssy is also distributed in Europe and a boutique is opened in New York. It is noticed and worn by hip-hop artists and fans – especially Stüssy T-shirts. More and more retailers buy and distribute Stüssy and more stores follow – including a flagship store in New York run by a certain James Jebbia. Via surfing, skateboarding and East Coast rap, Stüssy has managed to become a global streetwear player and to hold its own at the top.
