The long Levi's history begins as early as 1852: German immigrant Levi Strauss opens a haberdashery business in San Francisco, producing much-needed overalls for gold miners. After Levi's workwear becomes established, he begins researching ways to optimize it. In 1873, he and his tailor develop a very durable, robust fabric: blue denim – additionally reinforced with copper rivets, the denim became the "Waist Overalls", today also called "Blue Jeans".
